È il 16 dicembre 1972, 50 anni fa. A Trieste nasce la prima cooperativa sociale del mondo. L’avevano costituita 28 persone: due sociologi, due psicologi, cinque infermieri, un assistente sanitario, due medici e sedici privati che hanno tutti lo stesso indirizzo di residenza: via San Cilino 16, Trieste. Sono internati in ospedale psichiatrico e quindi non hanno diritti civili e politici: non possono votare, contrarre matrimonio, fare testamento. Figurarsi fondare una cooperativa. Così il Tribunale di Trieste rigettava l’istanza di costituzione della cooperativa. Sarebbe stata una lunga marcia attraverso le Istituzioni. Con Franco Basaglia e con Michele Zanetti, giovanissimo Presidente della Provincia che aveva voluto lo psichiatra veneziano come direttore dell’Ospedale Psichiatrico, dandogli carta bianca. Da allora, in migliaia di luoghi in Italia, migliaia di cooperative sociali fanno impresa, tutti i giorni, per tenere insieme lavoro, dignità, relazioni tra le persone.
It’s December 16, 1972, 50 years ago. The first social cooperative in the world is born in Trieste. It was formed by 28 people: two sociologists, two psychologists, five nurses, a healthcare assistant, two doctors and sixteen private individuals who all have the same residential address: via San Cilino 16, Trieste. They are interned in the psychiatric hospital and therefore they don’t have any civil and political rights: they cannot vote, marry or make a will. Imagine founding a cooperative. Thus the Court of Trieste rejected the request to establish the cooperative. It would have been a long march through the institutions. With Franco Basaglia and Michele Zanetti, the very young President of the Province who had wanted the Venetian psychiatrist as director of the Psychiatric Hospital, giving him carte blanche. Since then, in thousands of places in Italy, thousands of social cooperatives have been doing business, every day, to bring together work, dignity and relationships between people.
